Case study
Ny Sary An advert that fits into three gestures
A printing and framing service cannot be demonstrated, only told. We wrote and animated an advert that follows a traveller across Madagascar and brings the gesture back to the only place that matters: a living-room wall.
The context
Ny Sary is a professional photography studio in the Akoor Digue shopping centre in Antananarivo. You go there for family portraits and passport photos, you draw on a professional image library, and above all: you have your own photographs printed and framed. The studio sells the frames too.
It is that last activity that posed a communication problem, and a subtler one than it looks. Nobody wakes up thinking they need a framed print. The service does not answer a need people feel — it answers one they have never put into words: the photographs that matter sleep inside a phone, and never come out.
An advert that simply announces “printing and framing” therefore speaks to people who do not know it concerns them. The job was the opposite: make the result desirable before naming the service.
What we produced
An animated advert, written around three gestures — capture, print, hang.
A story rather than a demonstration
The decision was to break with the usual grammar of service advertising, which shows the shopfront, lists the services and displays a price. We wrote instead the story of a traveller crossing Madagascar and photographing the provinces he discovers.
The service is never explained. It appears where it would genuinely happen, in the middle of a journey and of a life.
Three steps, carried by the story
Each gesture of the service becomes a moment of the journey:
- Capture — the traveller photographs the landscapes and the moments he comes across on the way.
- Print — back home, he stops at Ny Sary to have his best images printed.
- Hang — the film ends on the framed photographs on his wall: the room has become a personal gallery of memories.
That progression does the work a list of services cannot. It shows the gap between a photograph that stays inside a camera and a photograph that occupies a wall — and that gap is precisely what Ny Sary sells.
Craft in the service of feeling
The film is an animation, not a shoot: 2D animation and compositing, with an original score. That choice is not only aesthetic. A live-action advert would have had to show a real traveller, real landscapes, a real living room — therefore choosing particular faces and particular places, and losing the universality of the point along the way. Illustration lets everyone recognise themselves in the traveller.
What it changes
The film does not present Ny Sary as a printing supplier. It presents it as the place where memories are turned into objects — which is the same activity, said in the customer’s terms rather than the studio’s.
That is the only effect an advert of this kind can honestly aim for: not to produce orders the next day, but to install a desire that did not exist, and to give the passer-by outside the Akoor Digue window a reason to come in that they did not have yesterday.
