Case study

Jolis Moineaux Learning to fly

A school is chosen on a promise no figure can carry. We handed the Jolis Moineaux promise to a bird learning to fly — the truest image of what a teacher does, and the only one parents recognise without explanation.

The context

Jolis Moineaux — “pretty sparrows” — is a school in Toliara. Its motto fits into three words: discipline, perseverance, self-respect.

Communicating for a school raises a problem few sectors know: what it sells cannot be shown. A pass rate is a number, not a promise; premises are walls; a list of subjects is the same everywhere. What a parent is really looking for — will somebody look after my child, and will they come out of it taller — has no visual proof.

So an image was needed. One image, understood without a caption.

What we produced

A motion design advert built around a bird learning to fly.

The metaphor, and why that one

A sparrow on the ground that eventually takes off: the school is called Jolis Moineaux, so the figure already belongs to it. But it is worth more than a play on words.

It says what no picture of a school building says — that learning is a process, that it begins with failures, and that the teacher’s role is not to carry the child but to let them try. A parent watching that bird needs no explanation: they recognise the scene.

A story that takes its time

The film runs to more than a minute — long for an advert, and deliberately so. The metaphor only works if you watch the bird fail before it succeeds; compressed into fifteen seconds, it turns back into an animated logo.

The animation moves through stages that are stages of learning too, up to a blackboard covered in “theories of flight” and Leonardo da Vinci’s flying machine. The joke is gentle, and it says exactly the right thing: you can study flight for a very long time, and you still have to jump.

What it changes

The school has a film that does not expire. An advert built on class sizes, fees or a specific intake is worth one season; this one is worth as long as the school teaches.

It is also a piece that speaks to both audiences at once: to the parents, who read a pedagogical promise in it, and to the children, who see a bird. Few school materials manage to address one without boring the other.
